SAGECREEK BRIEF

AI readiness vs. AI opportunity — they're not the same question

"Are we ready for AI" and "where does AI actually help us" are two different audits. Most companies only run one of them.

SAGECREEK AI · SEPTEMBER 18, 2026

Readiness is an internal question: how clean is our data, how many systems have real APIs, how comfortable is our team with these tools. It matters, but it's a diagnostic, not a strategy.

Opportunity is an external question: given how this business actually makes money, where does AI move revenue or margin the most? That question doesn't care whether your CRM has an API — it cares whether fixing that CRM is worth the six weeks it would take.

Run the opportunity question first. It tells you which readiness gaps are actually worth closing, instead of closing all of them in a vacuum and hoping something useful falls out the other end.

QUESTIONS

About this brief.

Readiness is internal: how clean your data is, how many systems have real APIs, how comfortable your team is with the tools. Opportunity is external: given how the business makes money, where does AI move revenue or margin the most?

Because it tells you which readiness gaps are worth closing. Without it, you close all of them in a vacuum and hope something useful falls out the other end.

It matters, but as a diagnostic, not a strategy. Fixing your CRM is only worth six weeks of work if the opportunity you're chasing depends on it.
